The HST or ‘Harmonized Sales Tax’ was introduced by the Ontario government in the 2009 provincial budget.
The government is replacing the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) with a new tax that is combined with the federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) to create one, single ‘harmonized’ tax (the HST).
The provincial portion of the HST is eight per cent while the federal portion remains five per cent, for a combined rate of 13 per cent.
When does the HST come into effect?
The HST takes effect on July 1, 2010.
How will this impact my electricity bill?
The HST will apply to all charges on a customer’s bill (distribution, transmission, regulatory, etc) which will result in a total increase of eight per cent.
Charges to customer bills from July 1 and onwards will be subject to the HST.
When will the HST first appear on my bill?
When Middlesex Power customers receive their first bill after July 1, they will see both GST and the HST line items. Charges will be pro-rated based on the customer’s consumption period and any charges AFTER July 1, will have the HST applied to them.
Moving forward, customers will then only see the HST on their bills. The majority of Middlesex Power customers will see the full impact of the HST on their bills beginning this fall.
What is Middlesex Power doing about the HST?
We understand that out customers are concerned about the financial impacts of the HST on their electricity bills, particularly given the current economic climate.
While this is a province-wide initiative, we will continue to do our best to keep you informed and to answer any questions you might have about the HST.
Is the HST permanent?
Yes. This is a permanent change to the provincial tax structure.
Where can I get more information on the HST?
You can learn more about the HST by visiting the Ontario Ministry of Revenue website at www.rev.gov.on.ca or by calling the province’s HST hotline at 1 800 337-7222Page Content Here! |
